Basil Harwood (1859-1949) was amongst several musicians of his generation to seek musical inspiration abroad. After schooling at Charterhouse he went up to Trinity College, Oxford, and then studied briefly with Reinecke and Jadassohn at the Leipzig Conservatory. Between 1883 and 1887 Harwood was organist at St Barnabas’s Church, Pimlico (where Ouseley had been a curate, donated an organ and paid for the choir’s costs). From there he moved to become organist of Ely Cathedral, and then in 1892 he was appointed preceptor at Keble College, Oxford (until 1903), conductor of the newly-formed Oxford Bach Choir and organist of Christ Church Cathedral. He held the latter post until 1909 when he retired from professional life. In 1900 he became a choragus of the University.
